Meadowlark Mural
Completion
Newton Murals & Arts Project was the recipient of a grant for $9500 from KCAIC which helped us create the Meadowlark Mural at 4th & Main, Newton in 2023.
This mural depicts 5 plasma cutout figures plus a plasma cutout meadowlark and a Space Bug created by Steve Goddard, local artist. The five plasma figures were a donation from the Newton High School Welding Department.
Above the figures, like a curtain, are 12 papel picado designs representing aspects of Kansas. We put out a Call for Art to junior high and high school students. Out of 40 submissions, twelve were chosen and received a check for $100 each for their designs.
What does this mural mean? Like Star Wars or the Wizard of Oz, we have five figures, some human and some not, plus a totem or two. The figures are on a road on a journey. The curtain above of papel picado figures creates the appearance of the figures being on a stage. To paraphrase Shakespeare, all the world is a stage and we are actors upon it.
